On a forlorn night a Ranger gallops into town. He remembers this place: the fight that caused his death, his life flashing before his eyes, the blacksmith's banging echoes, the frivolous fun at the brothel, playing poker at the local bar, dancing with Sue at City Hall, fearing the howling wolves, the hilarity of a mistaken sign while playing Cowboys and Crooks, charging open desert roads with his spinning spurs egging his horse on. He lifts his hat in respect and a slight smile appears under his moustache. He takes the reins and gives one kick and gallops off, leaving this gloomy afterlife for better shores; prodding his horse with the Spurs of a Dead Ranger.
1) Uber Jungle: This track has a very long history. With an old band, my twin brother started jamming a riff on a bass guitar. The riff is the first part of the song after the intro. So after the band didn't work out me and my brother and I kept jamming it on guitars. He and I wanted to make into a full blown song for almost two years. Then when we started our chiprock/vgrock band, Daburu Jump, we made into a complete song. But unfortunately Daburu Jump was not working out quite well, so I made that song into just some pure chiptune mayhem. It uses a DMG+LSDJ and MuddyGB.
2) Dead Ranger: I started making this song as a live LSDJ song, but soon realised how awesome this song is and made into a complete track with MuddyGB.
3) Bolt: This songs also continues my liking for tempo changing in songs. DMG+LSDJ and MuddyGB.
4) Spurs: The intro also started as a guitar riff, but it was really hard to get the correct timing into LSDJ so it kinda took on a life of it's own. This is probably my most intricate timing/tempo sections on the album. You will hear the Toy Guitar jamming it also in the intro and later on again in the same section. The rest of the song is DMG+LSDJ and MuddyGB.
5) This Is The Sign: From the T.I.T.S. EP. :P Added some slight changes and recorded on DMG rather than Pocket. Uses just DMG+LSDJ.
6) Brothel: This song was originally just a small riff from the begin part that also came from a guitar riff. It kept mulling about on my cart until I chose to flesh it out for the album. One of the last songs to finish for the album. Uses just DMG+LSDJ.
7) City Hall: Also I song I made long ago, but it kinda could not go anywhere. It originally had some weird stereo panning, but I took that out and fiddled around. Then I experimented with the Groove setting on LSDJ and this song fully came to live! Some schweet swing action going on. Uses DMG+LSDJ.
8) Local Bar: This was the last track written for the album. Actually two days before the release! I jam it out on my Toy Guitar with some kickass DMG+LSDJ action. The guitar riff however almost goes back two years. I love that riff in the intro and which is prominent in the majority of the song. When I found out I can jam in the Toy Guitar with some practice I just had to get this into the album.
9) Howling: The only song that has my Toy Keyboards in. The intro features a blue toy keyboard and then the rest of the song features my Animal Keyboard on the Bee setting with some gun sounds and such. This song is my most interesting song on the album. It somehow evokes so many emotions. Also uses DMG+LSDJ.
10) Gloom: The creepy ending song. I originally jammed this when experimenting with the vibrato commands and it came out all scary. I finished this and submitted it to the 8bc Hello World! Comp- lation is now availible. My twin brother really like this song.
I hope you enjoy the album as I spent some time on it and feels this will go well with any jam and situation of your life. Hope the Dead Ranger inspires you and rides with you everywhere! I would like to thank my twin brother for giving some insight and always listening to my tracks and also being generally as excited as I was for this project. Although he does not like every thing I added in the songs, but I do however value his input. Also thanks to the 8bitcollective community. You guys ROCK! Seriously, you guys inspire me and I have fun everytime I go online. Hopefully I will get to meet you guys sometime. :)
Also thanks to CalmDownKidder for hosting this on his label, CalmDownKidder Records. I appreciate it a lot. Also thanks to my flatmate Leon, who somehow manages to tolerate the noise. And thanks to Friedrich for letting me record at him. Ok, I'm done giving thanks.
Cheers, Niel (Sparkyboy)
