«Open mic felt like a mini festival with 11 performers from various parts of the country including Lexington, Detroit and New York City along with loved locals from Philadelphia. The performers were (in order of appearance): Janx, Barbecue, Sloopy goop, Ralfington w/ DJ cut man, The One Electronic, Solarbear, Hot tag, Soft reset, SKGB, Auxcide and Casshern. 8static’s open mic is known for it’s variety and for being the first place to hear new material and artists and this month’s was no exception. Hot TAG played together for the first time combining the talents of established chip musician, Ricky Brugal with newcomer One Rom and Julio. I also got the pleasure of seeing Janx perform for the first time adding to the every growing population of female artists within the scene.
Before Mr. Wimmer began his set he invited Solarbear to the stage to have his first alcoholic beverage- a rum and coke. Solarbear did not seem to take too kindly to the beverage however I have sources that say he warmed up to the flavor as the night went on.
Mr. Wimmer didn’t have his signature guitar and instead performed only with his keyboards and gameboys. That didn’t prevent having panties thrown at him from the crowd as adoring fans swooned over his romantic melodies. A few people actually paired off to slow dance bringing back memories of senior prom and other high school dances. His set definitely left us wanting more from this Kentucky chiptuner.
Ro-bear, the one local artist on the bill, scratched the itch to get out some energy and dance. He played a few crowd pleasers with covers of “It’s Gonna Be Me” by NSYNC and “Tonight” by J-Lo delighting the 8static crowd as they joined in with the chorus. Even though his covers are quite popular I connected more with his original work which is always a treat to see performed live.
Snesei of the Piko Piko Detroit crew headlined the night. He opened his set with the line “let’s get chipsy” which sent the crowd rushing to the front of the stage. It was pretty much non-stop dancing, cheering, and clapping for his entire site with a mosh pit breaking out during his cover of “Take On Me.” At the end of his set the crowd demanded more. For his encore he invited fellow Piko Piko member Barbecue to the stage to play a Snesei cover to promote his new album coming out. The crowd (including the night’s absolutely brilliant 8-bit visualist, Ohhinaifu) jumped on the stage for a end of night dance party in true 8static spirit.»[1]
